Tar Heels Rally To Top Virginia Tech, 18-11

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team overcame a sluggish start with a second-half rally to defeat Virginia Tech, 18-11, on Monday afternoon at Fetzer Field. With the win, Carolina improves to 4-2 this season, 2-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Virginia Tech falls to 2-3, 0-1 ACC.
Stephanie Scurachio had three goals and an assist and Melissa McCarthy had two goals and two assists to lead Carolina. Kelly Taylor, Brooke Dieringer, Amber Falcone, Meg Freshwater and Katie Brooks all scored two goals for UNC.
Stephanie Jones led the Hokies with three goals, while Britt Faulkner and Kady McBrearty each added two goals.
The Tar Heels trailed early by a 6-2 margin but recovered to lead 9-7 at halftime. UNC scored the first eight goals of the second half to increase its lead to 17-7, effectively putting the game out of reach.
Carolina trailed, 6-2, at the 10:32 mark of the first half. Jones scored two of the Hokies' first six goals in the early going. The Tar Heels responded with seven straight goals to take a 9-7 lead with under five minutes left in the half. Falcone scored two of the goals in the Carolina rally. Dieringer also scored twice in the first half for UNC.
Scurachio scored two of UNC's first three goals to start the rally in the second half. After brooks scored off a Scurachio assist at the 20:32 mark of the second half the Tar Heels led 17-7, eventually holding on for the victory.
The Tar Heels will return to action on Saturday, March 18, at Virginia.
