Tar Heels Return To ACC Play: No. 23 North Carolina (30-10, 4-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) will head north this weekend to face league rival Virginia in a three-game series. Carolina has won both of its ACC series so far in 2006, taking two of three at Florida State and two of three at home against Maryland. This marks just the second year that ACC series have been three-game affairs. Prior to 2005, teams only played a doubleheader.
Carolina Off To Best Start In 15 Years: With a sweep of the College of Charleston Wednesday, UNC got to 30 wins before April 1 for the first time in school history. The earliest date for that number prior to this season was April 13, accomplished by the 1991 squad. The 30-10 record marks a tie for the third-best 40-game record in school history. The 1986 Tar Heels, who reached 30 wins in 38 games, were 31-9 at the 40-game mark. The 1987 squad started 30-9-1, while the 1991 unit started 30-10.
Last Season Against Virginia: UNC and UVa split the 2005 season series, with each side winning two games. However, the Wahoos took two of three from the Tar Heels in the ACC series, winning the final two games by scores of 2-0 and 3-2. All four games in 2005 were played in Chapel Hill.
Last Time Out: Carolina improved to 10-2 on the road with a doubleheader sweep of Charleston Wednesday, 2-1 and 4-3. Each game went to extra innings, with the Tar Heels prevailing in the eighth on both occasions. The two extra inning wins were the first of the season for the Tar Heels against four losses.
Carolina In The Top 25: UNC is ranked 23rd in the most recent USA Today/NFCA Top 25, up one spot from No. 24 a week prior. The Feb. 15 ranking was the first Tar Heel appearance in the USA Today/NFCA poll in program history.
