CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina's 14th-ranked men's tennis team shutout the Navy Midshipmen 7-0 Saturday night to complete a sweep of the day's doubleheader held indoors at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill. The victory capped a big day for Carolina's tennis program as coach Sam Paul earned his 200th win at the school in the first half of the doubleheader with a shutout victory over Charlotte. With the wins the Tar Heels improve to 13-0 on the year and continue their best start to a season since 1973. Carolina joins Georgia and Georgia Tech as the only teams in the country that remain undefeated this season.
"I've been fortunate to coach at a great university and fortunate to work with some great people like my assistant Don Johnson and all the guys that played for me. I feel blessed," Paul said.
"It's a great place to be - great facilities and a great school. I've just been really lucky. I keep tapping myself because I can't believe it's true."
North Carolina swept all three doubles matches to win the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead in the match. Lenny Gullan and David Stone earned the first doubles victory for Carolina with a dominating 8-0 win over Navy's pairing of Brandon Carter and Nate Nelms.
Carolina's pairing of Raian Luchici and Brad Pomeroy, the third-ranked doubles team in the country, clinched the doubles point at No. 1 with an 8-3 victory over Navy's Adrian Lai and Stanley Kahl before Sebastian Guejman and Derek Porter teamed to defeat Alex James and Johnny Waters 8-3 at No. 3. Guejman and Porter are 10-0 in dual-match play this year.
Success in doubles matches has become common for the Tar Heels this year. Carolina's top three doubles pairs are a combined 30-2 in dual-matches this year.
The Tar Heels built on their doubles success when they entered singles play. Carolina pushed their lead to 2-0 after Guejman defeated Navy's Kahl in straight sets 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4. Carolina extended its lead to 3-0 when Brad Pomeroy defeated Nelms at the No. 1 spot. Benjamin Carlotti would clinch the victory for the Tar Heels with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Carter.
Carolina's other singles wins came from Will Plyler, Aly Mandour and Porter. Plyler defeated Navy's Waters 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 before Mandour, playing in his third dual-match of the season, defeated James 6-0, 6-4 at No. 6. The victory moves Mandour to 3-0 in dual-match play this year. Porter closed out the match with a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Lai at No. 2.
Carolina is back in action Monday, March 13 when they travel to California to take on San Diego. The match is part of a west coast road trip for the Tar Heels who will also take on San Diego State on Wednesday, March 15. The matches will be Carolina's last before Atlantic Coast Conference play begins.
