Tar Heel Tennis Team Finishes Regular Season With Home Matches This Weekend

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Coach Sam Paul's University of North Carolina men's tennis team, one of the great success stories in the Carolina athletic family this school year, will close out its 2005-06 regular season with home matches against the No. 11 -rated University of Virginia Cavaliers Friday and the No. 57 Virginia Tech Hokies Sunday.
Both matches will be played at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the outdoor courts. The match Friday is at 2:30 p.m. and Sunday's match is at 1 p.m.
Sunday's match against the Hokies will be the final home regular season appearance for UNC seniors Raian Luchici, Aly Mandour, Brad Pomeroy and Derek Porter.
The Tar Heels are 21-3 overall and 6-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Heels are ranked No. 12 this week by FILA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association. UNC is coming off a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to No. 6 Duke in Durham, N.C. on Wednesday. Senior Raian Luchici, senior Brad Pomeroy and sophomore Benjamin Carlotti each defeated Duke players ranked higher in the national ratings to give the Heels their three points in the match.
Virginia is the winner of the past two ACC titles which were also the Wahoos' first two conference titles in history. This year Virginia is No. 11 nationally with an 18-6 overall record and an 8-1 ACC record. The Cavaliers defeated North Carolina 5-2 last year in Chapel Hill.
Virginia Tech is No. 57 in the nation. The Hokies are 12-12 overall and 3-6 in the ACC heading into Friday's match at Duke. UNC defeated Virginia Tech 5-2 last year in Chapel Hill.
