Bumpers Earns Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarship

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Four North Carolina student-athletes were among 44 people honored Thursday by the Atlantic Coast Conference as recipients of postgraduate scholarships and honorary awards. Courtney Bumpers (gymnastics) and Katy Tran (field hockey) earned Weaver-James-Corrigan postgraduate scholarships, Laura Gerraughty (track and field) received a Jim and Pat Thacker postgraduate scholarship, and Lindsay Tarpley (soccer) was selected for a Weaver-James-Corrigan honorary award.
Recipients were recognized at a luncheon held at the Koury Convention Center.
The Weaver-James-Corrigan and Jim and Pat Thacker scholarships were given to 36 student-athletes who intend to pursue a graduate-level degree following graduation. Each recipient receives $5,000 to use toward his or her graduate education. Student-athletes receiving the award have performed with distinction in both the classroom and in their respective sports, while demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community.
In addition to those receiving scholarship funds, eight student-athletes who intend to continue their athletic careers on the Olympic or professional levels were selected for Weaver-James-Corrigan honorary awards. Recipients are recognized for their outstanding performance in athletic competition and the classroom throughout their collegiate careers.
The Weaver-James-Corrigan scholarship and award are named in honor of three former ACC commissioners, Gene Corrigan and the late Jim Weaver and Bob James.
The Thacker award, which originated in 2005, is given in honor of the late Jim and Pat Thacker of Charlotte, N.C. Recipients must intend to further their education through postgraduate studies at an ACC institution.
