Luchici Claims ACC Player Of The Week Honor For Third Time In 2006

GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina senior Raian Luchici has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Tennis Performer of the Week after a week in which he beat three ranked opponents in singles action and led the Tar Heels to a 2-1 record.
Luchici opened his week with a win over No. 4 Ludovic Walter in the Tar Heels' 4-3 road loss to No. 6 Duke on Wednesday. The Timisoara, Romania, native earned a 7-6 (3), 7-5 win over Walter at No. 1 singles as North Carolina fell to one of the teams that would ultimately end up tied for first in the league.
In No. 12 North Carolina's 4-3 win over No. 11 Virginia on Friday, Luchici knocked off another top-10 opponent, this time downing No. 9 Somdev Devvarman at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6). The loss was just the second in ACC play in the last 27 matches for Virginia, which also finished the season tied for first place.
Luchici wrapped his week with a 6-2, 6-4 win over No. 52 Arvid Puranen in the Tar Heels' 4-3 win over No. 57 Virginia Tech on Sunday. He and doubles partner Brad Pomeroy, ranked sixth in the nation, also earned an 8-1 win over Christian Guevara and Brent Wilkins at No. 1 doubles.
North Carolina finished the regular season with a 23-3 overall record, including an 8-3 mark in ACC play. The Tar Heels earned the No. 4 seed for the ACC Championship, which begins on Thursday, April 20, at the Cary Tennis Center in Cary, N.C.
