WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- Laura Gerraughty won a record-tying third individual event of the meet, while Vikas Gowda and Georgia Kloss added their own titles to lead the University of North Carolina track and field teams on day three of the Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Championships Saturday at Kentner Stadium on the campus of Wake Forest. The 10th-ranked Tar Heel women finished third overall with 105 points, while the 13th-ranked men were fifth with 85 points.
Gerraughty triumphed in the discus to become just the second woman in ACC history to win three individual events in one championship meet, joining Clemson's Jamine Moton in 2001. Her winning mark of 179 feet (54.55 meters) edged Virginia's Billie-Jo Grant. Teammates Jocelyn White (170-11/52.10m) and Marija Kurtovic (169-9/51.75m) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Gowda added an ACC title in the discus to Friday's school record in the shot put. The Frederick, Md., senior easily topped teammate Nick Owens with a winning throw of 197-4 (60.14m). Owens earned All-ACC honors for the second time in the meet with a mark of 179-11 (54.85m).
Kloss added an outdoor 800-meter run title to her indoor crown from earlier this year. Her winning time of 2:04.53 was a stadium record and almost four full seconds better than the rest of the field. Teammate Megan Kaltenbach led the trail pack, earning All-ACC honors with a second-place time of 2:08.38. Brie Felnagle also scored in the event, finishing eighth.
Kaltenbach also earned All-ACC accolades with a second-place finish in the 1,500 meters. Her time of 4:20.54 was just behind champion Natalie Hughes of Florida State.
Sheena Gordon and Reggie Berry scored in a pair of events, claiming All-ACC honors in one event each. Gordon was third in the high jump with a top mark of 5-10 3/4 (1.80m). Champion Debra Vento and runner-up Viktoria Andonova had the same clearance, but had fewer prior misses. Teammate Ashley Haislip joined Gordon in the high jump, clearing 5-7 (1.70m) on her first attempt to finish fourth. Gordon also took sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 41-7 1/4 (12.68m).
Berry was third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.93 and fifth in the 200 in 21.47.
Colleen Farley and Nyoka Norman gave Carolina two scorers in the women's 400-meter hurdles. Farley was fifth in 1:00.95, while Norman was seventh in 1:01.59.
Pablo Durana finished fifth in the 5,000 meters in his final ACC outdoor meet. The Montreal, Quebec, senior clocked in with a personal-best time of 14:22.81.
Britt Taylor had a scoring effort in the jumps for the second straight day. His triple jump of 47-8 (14.53m) came on his final attempt and was good for fifth place.
The Miami women and Florida State men repeated their ACC team titles. Miami finished with 154 points to easily defeat runner-up Florida State (112). Florida State also won with relative ease, earning 161 points to take down Clemson (119).
Both Carolina teams finished ahead of Duke in the overall standings, giving the Tar Heels a pair of points in the Carlyle Cup, the annual all-sports competition between the two schools. With the two points, Carolina and Duke are tied at 12-all.
Next up for Carolina is the prestigious Penn Relays in Philadelphia.
