The UNC Women's Golf Team Heads To NCAA East Regional

TAR HEEL GOLF NOTES
CAROLINA IN THE NCAA EAST REGIONAL: Carolina has received a bid to the NCAA East Regional 13 times since the regional format was instituted in women's golf in 1993 - 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006. In Carolina's 12 previous East Regional appearances, the Tar Heels' top performance came in 1993 when they finished in fourth place and Tar Heel Kimberly Byham won the individual title by two strokes with a 213 total after firing a 69 in the final round. The Tar Heels advanced on to the NCAA Championship from the East Regional in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1998, 2003 and 2004. Carolina has been to the NCAA Championship 10 times - 1982, 1984, 1989, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1998, 2003 and 2004.
THIS YEAR'S EAST REGIONAL: This year's NCAA East Regional will be played at the Bryan Park Champions Course in Browns Summit, N.C., which features a par 72, 6,386-yard layout. Twenty-one teams and three individuals will compete in the three-day, 54-hole East Regional May 11-14 for the chance to move on to the NCAA Championship to be played May 23-26 at the University Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio. Eight teams and the top two individuals not on those eight teams will advance to the NCAA Championship from each of the three regionals -- the East Regional in Browns Summit, N.C., the Central Regional in College Station, Tex., and the West Regional in Las Auburn, Wash. The teams competing in this year's NCAA East Regional are as follows (Golfweek/Sagarin Ranking in parenthesis): Arizona State (3), Auburn (4), Tennessee (9), Wake Forest (13), California (11), Vanderbilt (14), Virginia (18), South Carolina (26), LSU (30), Florida State (33), Alabama (35), NC State (37), Augusta State (32), Maryland (45), Furman (46), North Carolina (40), Mississippi State (49), Campbell (62), College of Charleston (59), East Carolina (60) and Yale (78). The three individual participants are Adrienne White of Louisville, Christina Jones of South Florida and Michele Jarman of UNC Wilmington.
CAROLINA'S SPRING CAMPAIGN: Carolina's top finish this spring was a seventh-place finish at the ACC Championship. A trio of Tar Heels carded top-25 finishes as junior Katie Miller tied for 19th place, freshman Lauren Hunt tied for 22nd and sophomore Laura Caniff tied for 24th place. Carolina posted an eighth-place finish at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, the first event of the spring campaign. Sophomore Ann Laney finished in third place with a two-over-par 218 total. The Tar Heels placed ninth at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational, finished 13th at the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic and placed 14th at the Bryan National Collegiate. Laney was once again the low Tar Heel in all three of those events, tying for 11th place at the Betsy Rawls Invitational, tying for 24th at the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic and tying for 44th place at the Bryan National Collegiate. Miller tied for 16th at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational while Hunt tied for 22nd at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic and tied for 30th at the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic.
CAROLINA'S FALL CAMPAIGN: Carolina's top performance of the fall was a runner-up finish at the Wildcat Fall Invitational in Lexington, Ky. where a trio of Tar Heels carded top-20 finishes - Katie Miller tied for second place, Lauren Hunt tied for 10th and sophomore Laura Caniff tied for 16th place. Carolina finished in eighth place at the Cougar Classic, tied for 11th at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate and finished 14th at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational. Miller tied for 15th place at the Cougar Classic while Ann Laney tied for 22nd. Hunt was Carolina's low scorer in the Lady Tar Heel Invitational, tying for 32nd place while Hunt and another freshman, Sydney Crane, tied for 34th place at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate.
ANN LANEY NAMED TO ALL-ACC TEAM: Ann Laney, a sophomore from Charlotte, N.C., was one of 12 players selected to this year's All-ACC team. The other members on the squad are Duke's Elizabeth Janangelo, Anna Grzebien, Jennifer Pandolfi, Amanda Blumenherst and Jennie Lee; Virginia's Leah Wigger and Lauren Mielbrecht; Wake Forest's Amanda Goins and Nannette Hill; Florida State's Caroline Westrup and Maryland's Katie Stepanek. Duke's Blumenherst, the individual medalist at the ACC Championship, was named the ACC Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. Blue Devil head coach Dan Brooks received Coach of the Year accolades for the 10th time in his career.
