UNC Women's Golf Team Finishes First Round Of East Regional Tied For Sixth

Browns Summit, N.C.-The UNC Women's golf team completed the first round of the 2006 East Regional tied for sixth place at 296, eight-under-par, with South Carolina, Vanderbilt and host Wake Forest. Leading in team standings is Louisiana State and California with both finishing at even-par, 288. The Bengals and the Bears are followed by three contenders from the Southeast Conference including Tennessee, Alabama and Auburn.
Alabama golfer Jenny Suh leads in individual competition having compiled a three-under-par, 69. Melissa Eaton of LSU, Mandy Goins of Wake Forest, Lauren Smith of Augusta State and Marci Turner of Tennessee are tied for second at two-under-par, 70. Nine golfers are tied for sixth place at one-under-par, 71.
After a positive team outing on day one, UNC Women's golf coach Sally Austin, stated that "we want to build on this outing and improve everyday. Speaking to Sydney Crane's performance, Austin states, "she hit the ball brilliantly and played very steady; she hit 16 greens." Austin also praised the effort of Katie Miller who made the turn at three-over-par and bogeyed the 10th, yet, "Katie hung in there and finished the day with a one-over-par, 73. It was a great effort."
The remaining UNC golfers include Laura Caniff who completed the day with a three-over-par, 75, while Ann Laney finished with a 76, and Lauren Hunt had a round of 83.
This year's East Regional is being played at the Bryan Park Champions Course in Browns Summit, N.C., which features a par 72, 6,386-yard layout. The event runs from Thurday, May 11 through Saturday, May 13. Twenty one teams and three individuals are competing in the three-day, 54 hole event. The top eight teams and the top two individuals not on those eight teams will advance to face the qualifiers from the Central and West Regions in the NCAA Championship round to be played May 23-26 at the University Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio.
