INDIANAPOLIS - On the strength of a school-record 45 regular season victories and the Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division title, the University of North Carolina has been selected as one of 16 regional host sites for the 2006 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, the NCAA announced Sunday. The Tar Heels, who will host a regional for the first time since 1983 and just the second time in program history, will find out who will join them next weekend at Boshamer Stadium when the 64-team field is announced on ESPN's "Road to Omaha" selection show at 12:30 p.m. Monday.
Play begins Friday, June 2, and runs through Sunday, June 4. A seventh game would be played June 5, if needed.
"We are very excited to host a regional in front of our home crowd at Boshamer Stadium," said eighth-year head coach Mike Fox. "We hope Tar Heel fans will come out for three or four great days of baseball and create a real home-field advantage, which is extremely important in the postseason. This regional is a reward for all the hard work by our players, coaches and support staff and is another step in the right direction as we continue to build Carolina Baseball into one of the top programs in the nation."
Tickets for the event are on sale now at TarHeelBlue.com and can also be purchased by calling the UNC Ticket Office at 1-800-722-4335 beginning Tuesday and continuing through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets will be available on an all-session basis only until Friday, when individual game tickets as well as all-session tickets will be available.
Individual game tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students (age three to college age) and seniors (age 55 and up), and all-session passes are $48 and $30, respectively. The all-session pass does not include a ticket to the potential seventh game June 5. If a seventh game is necessary, a separate individual game ticket will be needed.
All tickets are general admission, and no outside food or beverages will be allowed in the stadium.
Gates will open two hours before the first game each day, and the stadium will be cleared between games per NCAA regulations. Parking will be available in the Ramshead Deck for $5 per day and at the Smith Center at no charge.
The Tar Heels (45-13) set a school record with 35 home victories this season and did not lose a weekend series at Boshamer Stadium, the home of Carolina Baseball since 1972. UNC played its 1,000th game at "The Bosh" April 2 and hosted the NCAA East Regional there in 1983.
Carolina was one of four ACC schools chosen as sites, as Clemson, Georgia Tech and Virginia will also open the tourney at home. The remaining 12 host institutions are: Alabama, Arkansas, Cal State Fullerton, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon State, Pepperdine, Rice and Texas. The winners of the 16 regionals will meet June 9-11 in the best-of-three Super Regional round to determine the eight-team field of the 2006 College World Series, set for June 16-26 in Omaha, Neb.
