TUSCON, Ariz. - Junior left-hander Andrew Miller became North Carolina's first All-America starting pitcher since 1989, and shortstop Josh Horton picked up third-team accolades, as Collegiate Baseball newspaper announced its 2006 Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I All-America teams Friday.
Miller, who is 11-2 with a 2.07 ERA and 102 strikeouts, earns All-America honors for the first time in his career and is the first UNC starting pitcher to earn such honors since John Thoden in 1989. The ACC Pitcher of the Year, Miller is Carolina's first first-team All-America starter since Scott Bankhead in 1984 and is the only Atlantic Coast Conference player to claim a spot on the first team.
Horton, who leads the ACC with a .408 average, has tallied career-bests of five home runs and 48 RBI on the year. The Hillsborough product has also swiped 11 bases and scored 51 runs. A two-time all-conference choice, Horton is aiming to become the first Tar Heel to hit over .400 since 2003 and just the program's second ACC batting champ since 1979.
Miller, Horton and the Tar Heels open the 2006 NCAA Chapel Hill Regional against Maine at 6 p.m. Friday.
