TUSCON, Ariz. - Fresh off earning all-tournament honors at the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional, North Carolina catcher Tim Federowicz was named to Collegiate Baseball newspaper's Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Team Thursday. The Apex, N.C., product is batting .323 with nine home runs and 52 RBI in 59 games this season.
Federowicz, who has split time at catcher and designated hitter, led the Tar Heels with a .692 average (9-13) in their regional win last weekend. On the season, he is second on the squad with 16 doubles and his 52 RBI are third and nine homers rank fourth. Federowicz is slugging .521.
He has been just as valuable behind the plate, where he has committed just two errors and owns a .993 fielding percentage. Federowicz has thrown out 11 base runners, and opponents have attempted to steal just 23 times against him.
Federowicz's selection marks the fourth straight year that Carolina has had at least one freshman All-America honoree. Chad Flack, Josh Horton and Seth Williams were honored a year ago, while Daniel Bard was selected in 2004.
