STANLEY, N.C. - Lauren Hunt, a rising sophomore on the University of North Carolina women's golf team, captured the title at the 9th Carolinas Women's Match Play Championship. Hunt, from Little River, S.C., defeated Michelle Jarman, a former UNC Wilmington golfer, 5&4 in the final match which was played at Cowans Ford Country Club, a par 72, 5,997-yard layout.
"I made a lot of great putts in the final match," said Hunt, champion of the 2005 Carolinas Women's Golf Association Amateur. "I had heard that Michelle had a hot putter so I really focused on making some putts. I was lucky they fell for me. I am honored to have won this championship."
Earlier in the semifinal match, Hunt faced Tar Heel teammate Sydney Crane, also a rising sophomore from Jamestown, N.C. In a close match that came down to the last hole, Hunt made a par-saving putt on the 18th hole to close out the match to win 1 up over her fellow teammate.
Earlier this month, Hunt and another Tar Heel teammate, Katie Miller, a rising senior from Jeannette, Pa., qualified for the 106th U.S. Women's Amateur which will be played August 7-13 at the Witch Hollow Course at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Ore. Tar Heel Ann Laney, a rising junior from Charlotte, N.C., is an alternate. Hunt and Miller qualified for the prestigious amateur which will feature 156 top women athletes at Sapona Country Club in Lexington, N.C. Hunt carded a 70 while Miller shot 71 and Laney posted a 74.
