Freshman Kearney Goes Undefeated In Singles Play At The Napa Valley Classic

NAPA VALLEY, Calif.- The University of North Carolina men's tennis team opened up its fall season this weekend competing in the Napa Valley Classic. Making his first appearance as a Tar Heel, freshman Chris Kearney went 2-0 in singles action, as well as junior Will Plyler. Lone senior Sebastian Guejman and junior Benjamin Carlotti posted a perfect 3-0 in doubles.
Kearney, who hails from Irvine, Calif., edged two Mississippi players, Jakob Klaeson, 6-2, 6-1, and Chris Rae, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, respectively. Plyler, a native of Raleigh, N.C., downed California's Jeff Chizever 6-3, 6-2, and John Pettit 6-4, 6-4, to mark a perfect record of 2-0. Junior Karl Wishart went 2-1 in singles action, defeating California's Vaclav Burger and Jeff Chizever. Wishart fell to California's Kallim Stewart to go 2-1 in the tournament.
In doubles action, upperclassmen Guejman and Carlotti posted an untainted record. The Tar Heels doubles pair topped California's John Pettit and Pierre Mouillon, 9-7, and Kallim Stewart and Vaclav Burger, 9-7. Guejman and Carlotti edged University of Illinois' Billy Heiser and Brandon Davis 9-8 (5) Sunday to post a 3-0 doubles record for the weekend.
The Tar Heels continue action Sept. 15-17 at the NC State Fall Tournament.
