CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Third-ranked Old Dominion handed the fourth-ranked North Carolina field hockey team its first loss of the season 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Francis E. Henry Stadium. After UNC's only goal tied the score at 1-1 early in the second half, the Lady Monarchs responded with two more goals to seal the win.
Both teams came out of the game with 6-1 records. UNC returns to action on Sunday, hosting No. 10 Virginia for a 1 p.m. game at Henry Stadium. The matchup is the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams.
"It's always nice to get back up on the horse and I'm excited that we have a chance to play again so soon," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We know Virginia is going to be a tough test, but the question is, `how do you respond after a loss?' I feel like we've learned some things today and the team recognizes that wasn't our best performance. We're disappointed we didn't play better, but we get another chance tomorrow."
Old Dominion scored first, on an unassisted shot by freshman Hanna Warren with just over three minutes to play in the first half. The Tar Heels evened the score with 26:49 on the clock in the second half. On a penalty corner, Hilary Hartman's initial shot was blocked into the air. Freshman Illse Davids batted it down and shot the ball past ODU's Kelly Driscoll for her second goal of the season.
ODU went ahead for good with 12:11 on the clock when Denise Admiraal grabbed the ball near the goal after a UNC save and got it past Tar Heel goalkeeper Brianna O'Donnell. The Lady Monarchs' final score game two minutes later, when Dana Sensenig sent a penalty stroke into the left side of the cage.
After a fairly even first half with seven shots for ODU and six for UNC, the Lady Monarchs outshot the Tar Heels 8-2 in the second half. Old Dominion finished with five corners to UNC's two. Driscoll had three saves, while O'Donnell finished with six.
"I congratulate Old Dominion," Shelton said. "I think they were typical Old Dominion in that they put a lot of pressure on us and took us out of our rhythm. We've been playing very well and they disrupted our patterns and made things very hectic for us and made us make poor decisions with the ball."
