Heather O'Reilly scored two goals for UNC for the first time since September 9, 2005 when Carolina defeated San Francisco 6-1.
The last time UNC lost a game after scoring first in the match was at Clemson on, September 13, 2000, when Carolina dropped the match to Clemson 2-1.
The Tar Heels improved to 18-1-1 against Florida State all-time.
Carolina is 18-1-1 in ACC openers since the conference began women's soccer play in 1987.
Heather O'Reilly scored the 50th goal of her career in the first half. She becomes the 14th Tar Heel to score 50 goals in her career. She went on to score her 51st goal for the game-winner against Florida State in the 84th minute.
The game marks the first time UNC has played and defeated a team ranked higher than it at Fetzer Field since October 20, 1990 when UNC defeated No. 1 Virginia 3-0.
Heather O'Reilly now has 137 career points and has moved into 13th place all-time at Carolina.
Heather O'Reilly has now scored the winning goal in back-to-back games, both coming against schools from the state of Florida.
Florida State's goal ended Anna Rodenbough's scoreless streak of 558 minutes and 24 seconds in the goal.
