DURHAM, N.C. - No. 4 Duke scored on a penalty stroke in overtime to earn a 2-1 win over No. 5 North Carolina in field hockey Saturday afternoon at Williams Field. UNC fell to 6-3 on the season with its third consecutive loss and is now 0-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Duke improved to 7-2 overall (1-1 ACC).
Duke's win gave the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead in this year's race for the Carlyle Cup, the annual all-sports competition between the two schools. UNC has won the last two cups.
Neither team scored in the first half, but the Blue Devils dominated the statistics, with eight shots to UNC's one and five penalty corners to one by the Tar Heels.
Duke quickly took the lead in the second half, with an unassisted goal by Amie Survilla two minutes into the period. The Tar Heels had more chances in the second half - eight shots to four by Duke and three corners while Duke had none - but didn't get on the board until there was 5:07 remaining in the game. On a penalty corner, UNC's third of the half, Brooke Miller's initial shot was saved by Caitlin Williams. Freshman Danielle Forword then sent in another shot, which also was saved. UNC's third try was by senior Karen Mann, who got the ball past Williams for her seventh goal of the season.
Both teams had opportunities to score in the extra period, with the Blue Devils getting off three shots and UNC two. Twice, UNC players carried the ball into the circle on break-aways, but were thwarted by Williams, who came out to meet them and kick the ball away before the Tar Heels could get off a shot.
The winning goal, by Amy Stopford, came with 3:39 remaining in the overtime period. Duke was awarded a penalty stroke, the second of the season by a UNC opponent, and Stopford sent the ball into the left side of the cage.
"We didn't win the game today, but we made progress in our development," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "I thought we fought hard and tough on an opponent's field and I feel good about our team's development.
"Yes, we would have loved to have won the game, but we have to recognize when we make progress. There are things we recognize that we did that worked, there are things that we recognize that we didn't do that hurt us. So hopefully we'll just continue to grow and develop as a team and a unit and improve for tomorrow."
UNC returns to action on Sunday, hosting the Albany Great Danes at Francis E. Henry Stadium. Game time is 1 p.m.
