Scott Campbell and Heather O'Reilly each scored winning goals as the Tar Heel men's and women's soccer teams defeated the No. 1 ranked teams in the nation last week and are the Progress Energy Tar Heels of the Week for September 18-24, 2006.
Campbell, a sophomore midfielder from Plantation, Fla., led the Tar Heels to wins over No. 1 Virginia and VCU with a goal in each game last week. In Friday's 2-1 victory over the Cavaliers, the Plantation, Fla., product gave UNC a 1-0 lead with a header in the 68th minute. Earlier in the week, Campbell finished off a 3-1 win over VCU with a goal in the 73rd minute. Since moving into the starting lineup five games ago, Campbell has eight points on three goals and two assists. He leads the team with nine points and shares the Tar Heel lead with three goals and three assists.
O'Reilly, a senior forward from East Brunswick, N.J., scored three goals during the week to propel No. 4-ranked North Carolina to a 2-0 week with wins over Florida State, ranked No. 1 by Soccer America, by a 2-1 score and Miami by a 6-1 score. O'Reilly, who has now scored four goals in the last three games and has five for the season, opened the scoring against the Seminoles with a 28-yard blast in the first half and then, with the game tied, she sent a bending shot from outside the top of the box to record the game winner with less than seven minutes remaining. The goal was O'Reilly's first game winner of the 2006 season and lifted UNC to the win in the battle of Top 4 ACC teams. O'Reilly came back Sunday to score less than seven minutes into the second half on a 25-yard shot to give the Tar Heels a safe 3-1 lead en route to a 6-1 UNC triumph. O'Reilly is UNC's second-leading scorer with 12 points (5 goals, 2 assists) and she has led Carolina to a 10-game winning streak to improve to 10-1 overall and 2-0 in the ACC.
