CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The sixth-ranked North Carolina field hockey team beat Appalchian State 11-0 Wednesday evening at Francis E. Henry Stadium for the Tar Heels' second shutout in a row and highest scoring game since the 2001 season. Sophomore Britt van Beek scored four goals for Carolina, and senior Karen Mann, junior Alli Tanner and freshman Danielle Forword added two each. UNC improved to 8-3 on the season, while the Mountaineers fell to 0-10.
"I'm proud of the team for the win and the amount of goals that we scored," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "I thought we showed good versatility in moving a lot of players around the field in different formations that led to unselfish play and good ball movement."
Van Beek came into the match with one goal this season and eclipsed total that within the opening 10:16 of play. She scored UNC's first goal less than five minutes into the game, on a penalty corner assisted by juniors Jesse Gey and Xan Funk with 30:36 on the clock. Less than six minutes later, she made it 2-0 on an unassisted goal.
The Tar Heels scored five times in the final 10:17 of the first half, with both of Mann's goals coming in that span. She scored from in front of the cage at the 10:17 minute mark. Forword followed that with a hard shot from just inside the circle with 8:55 remaining in the half. With 3:01 on the clock, Tanner grabbed a ball that came off the pads of Appalachian State goalkeeper Mikayla Paulson and put it back for a goal. Less than 30 seconds later, junior Liz Morris sent a pass across the goal to Mann, who put it in for her 10th score of the year. With 41 seconds remaining in the half, Tanner made it 7-0 on an assist from senior Brooke Miller.
UNC added four more goals in the second half. With 23:09 remaining, junior Heather Kendell scored from just in front of the cage for her first goal of the year. Four minutes later, van Beek scored for the third time on a rebound after Paulson saved a shot by Forword. Forword got her second goal of the game at the 18:30 mark, putting in a pass from freshman Illse Davids. The final score came on a penalty corner with 2:27 on the clock when Miller passed to van Beek for her fourth goal of the game.
"If I had to pick a most improved player from the beginning of the season to now it would be Britt," Shelton said. "She's starting to play with the confidence and toughness that we've always known she had but just hadn't displayed consistently. She's really becoming a factor for us."
The Tar Heels finished with 33 shots to four by the Mountaineers. Paulson made six saves, while UNC goalkeeper Brianna O'Donnell had two. Freshman Jessie Harris also contributed a defensive save for ASU.
UNC returns to action this weekend with a pair of home games against ranked opponents. No. 2 Wake Forest visits Henry Stadium on Saturday for an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup. At 0-2, the Tar Heels are still looking for their first win in league play. Sunday, No. 18 William & Mary comes to Chapel Hill. Both games are set for 1 p.m.
