Hughes Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week
September 4, 2006 | Men's Soccer
Sept. 4, 2006
Senior goalkeeper Justin Hughes had six saves, several of the spectacular variety, in leading the No. 1 ranked men's soccer to a pair of shutout victories over Penn State and Ohio State and is the Progress Energy Performer of the Week for August 28-September 3, 2006.
The Wake Forest, N.C., native led Carolina to wins over the two nationally-ranked opponents at the Carolina Nike Classic. Despite being hampered by a groin injury, he made six saves in the two games and also punched out a number of loose balls in front of the net. Hughes and the Tar Heels have not allowed a goal this season and have tied a school record set last year with four straight shutouts to open a season. Hughes now has 17 career shutouts and has allowed just six goals in 15 games since moving into the starting lineup in mid-October 2005.
Other Nominees:
Yael Averbuch
Women's Soccer, Midfielder
Sophomore, Upper Montclair, N.J.
Yael Averbuch set an NCAA record in North Carolina's 4-0 victory over Yale September 3 by scoring just four seconds into the match, the fastest goal ever scored in a collegiate women's soccer game and equaling the fastest goal ever scored in a collegiate men's soccer match. Averbuch scored directly off the game's kickoff, sending a 55-yard shot on the opening direct kick into the top center of the net over the outstretched Yale goalkeeper. Averbuch also assisted on UNC's second goal of the match and she scored UNC's third goal of the game, also in the first half, on a 25-yard shot from the left wing. Averbuch increased her season goal total to four as she helped the Tar Heels finish a 3-0 week, improving to 4-1 overall. Averbuch was named the offensive MVP for Carolina in the East Coast Invitational in which UNC beat Connecticut 3-2 Friday and Yale 4-0 Sunday.
BROOKS FOSTER
Football, Wide Receiver
Sophomore, Spartanburg, S.C.
Foster set a UNC sophomore record with 11 receptions for 120 yards. Last year, Foster played in five games but did not have a catch. The 11 receptions equal the third-most ever in a game by a Tar Heel and broke the previous record for a sophomore which was nine. He had 10 receptions in the second half, including seven in the fourth quarter. At one stretch in the final quarter, quarterback Joe Dailey connected with Foster on six consecutive snaps. That drive ended with a 2-yard touchdown pass from Dailey to freshman Hakeem Nicks.
KAREN MANN
Field Hockey, Forward
Senior, North Vancouver, British Columbia
Mann scored two goals to lead the Tar Heels (3-0) to a 4-1 win Saturday at No. 18 James Madison. She has four goals in the season's first three games.
