DURHAM, N.C. - Junior shortstop Josh Horton was named a second-team preseason All-America by Baseball America Friday, giving the Hillsborough native four preseason All-America accolades. Horton has also been honored by Collegiate Baseball, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and Rivals.com.
An All-America selection as a sophomore, Horton currently ranks third all-time at Carolina with a .375 career batting average. He tallied 107 hits a year ago to rank second on the UNC single-season list and won the ACC batting title with a .395 average to go along with seven homers and 59 RBI.
Baseball America's All-America team was selected by major league scouting directors. It's based on potential as well as past performance and thus often proves a strong indicator of future success even if accompanying statistics are not as inspiring as some other college players.
Horton and the rest of the Tar Heels open the 2007 season against Seton Hall Feb. 16.
