Four Tar Heels Advance at All-American Qualifying

Tulsa, Okla. - Tar Heel seniors Lenny Gullan and David Stone posted impressive singles victories Monday in the opening round of Qualifying at the All-American Championships. Four of the five Tar Heels participating in the 128 player qualifier won singles matches. In addition to wins by Gullan and Stone, nationally ranked Benjamin Carlotti and 2007 ACC Rookie of the Year, Chris Kearney also recorded straight set victories.
Gullan upset Georgia's Jamie Hunt (seeded 15th) 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Gullan handed Hunt only the seventh loss of his career at UGA. Last season Hunt posted a 28-6 singles record playing the #4-6 singles positions for the Bulldogs. David Stone also won his fifth straight singles match this fall with a grueling 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-4 win over Washington's Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan.
Sixteen players will advance to Thursday's main draw. Each Tar Heel will have to win two more singles matches over the next two days to advance. Carolina's Benjamin Carlotti is the ninth seed in Qualifying. Doubles play will begin on Tuesday with the Tar Heel tandems of Taylor Fogleman and Chris Kearney and Clay Donato and Stefan Hardy. Carolina's nationally ranked #1 doubles team of Lenny Gullan and David Stone received an automatic berth in the main draw which begins on Thursday.
