CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina men's soccer team looks to build on the momentum of its overtime victory over Duke on Oct. 11 when it faces Elon Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Rhodes Stadium. The Tar Heels (4-3-4) have won all 10 meetings with the Phoenix (6-3-3) dating to 1980.
While Carolina is coming off its dramatic win over the Blue Devils, Elon enters the match coming off a 2-0 loss at College of Charleston on Oct. 9. The Phoenix had posted an eight-match unbeaten streak prior to that loss with ties against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents Wake Forest and Clemson over this stretch.
Despite the 10-0-0 all-time mark in the series, Elon has been a tough opponent in Chapel Hill in 2005 and 2006, taking the Tar Heels to overtime in both games. UNC won its last match at Elon, 3-1, in 2004.
Carolina has five players with five or more points on the season, including leading scorer Bill Dworsky, who has 10 points and four goals. Ryan Adeleye, who was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week Monday, scored the game-winner against Duke and has two goals in the last three games.
Adeleye and the Tar Heel defense has yielded only eight goals on the season, and freshman goalkeeper Tyler Deric has recorded five shutouts in 10 starts.
The Phoenix has three players with 10 or more points, including leading scorer Justin Wyatt, who has 16 points and seven goals. Elon has allowed just nine goals in 12 matches this season.
Tuesday's game will benefit The V Foundation for Cancer Research with $1 from each ticket sold going directly to the cause. A silent auction featuring various college and Major League Soccer items will also benefit The V Foundation.
