Carlotti & Hardy Move On To ITA Regional Quarterfinals

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - The North Carolina men's tennis team had another tremendous day of results at Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mideast Regional Championships at the Boars Head Inn and Country Club Saturday afternoon with senior Benjamin Carlotti and sophomore Stefan Hardy advancing in singles play and sophomore Chris Kearney and junior Taylor Fogleman moving on to the tournament semifinals.
The doubles champions and singles finalists will advance to the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships November 1-4 hosted by Ohio State University at the Columbus Racquet Club in Columbus, Ohio.
Hardy and Carlotti both won their Round of 16 singles matches on Saturday. No. 9 seed Stefan Hardy upset No. 5 seed Nick Cavaday of NC State 6-4, 7-5. Meanwhile, Benjamin Calotti, also seed No. 5, defeated No. 9 seed Jean-Yves Aubone of Florida State Saturday 6-3, 7-6 (11-9).
On Sunday in the quarterfinals, Hardy will meet No. 9 seed Clint Bowles of Florida State while Carlotti will face No. 2 seed Martin Sayer of Radford.
Fogleman and Kearney won two doubles matches on Saturday to advance to the semifinals. In the round of 16 they defeated No. 13 Jean-Yves Aubone and Clint Bowles of FSU 8-6. In their quarterfinal match the Tar Heel duo downed No. 2 seeds Alexandru Cojanu and Keziel Juneau of William & Mary 9-8 (9-7 in the tiebreaker).
In a matchup of UNC teams, senior Will Plyler and red-shirt freshman Kyle Baker defeated Carolina's Benjamin Carlotti and Andrew Crone 8-3 in the Round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Baker and Plyler were defeated by Renzo Aivaldo and Sandy Franz of USC Upstate 8-2. Fogleman and Kearney will meet Aivaldo and Franz in the semifinals on Sunday.
Two other UNC doubles doubles lost in the Round of 16 Saturday. No. 16 seeds Clay Donato and Stefan Hardy fell to Cory Parr and Steven Forman of Wake Forest 8-4. No. 15 seeds Michael Shabaz and Sanam Singh of Virginia downed No. 4 seeds Lenny Gullan and David Stone 9-8 (7-1 in breaker).
