As the North Carolina volleyball team reaches the midway point of the Atlantic Coast Conference slate Tarheelblue.com had a chance to talk to freshman Sue Haydel. The Marrero, La. native totaled 16 kills in Carolina's split against Florida State and Miami this past weekend. Haydel currently ranks third on the squad with 145 kills on the season in her first season of collegiate volleyball.
1. How did you get started as a volleyball player?
It was a family thing. I actually have four older cousins that played volleyball. They were great at it, and they began to get me interested as well. I had to keep the family tradition going.
2. Do you have any pregame rituals or superstitions?
I always have to listen to music either as a team or by myself. It just gets me in a better mood and really excited for the match.
3. Has it been hard adjusting to college life as an athlete?
Definitely. The coaches and team demand a lot from you everyday. You have to go hard everyday whether it be weights or practice. You also have to worry about a lot of other things as well, like when are you going to do your laundry or what am I going to eat that day. There is just a lot to think about other than volleyball, including class.
4. What do you like most about being an athlete at UNC?
To be a part of such a great tradition at Carolina among all the athletes is a great feeling of accomplishment and self-confidence. It helps me push to be a better person outside of the actual sport.
5. Who in the volleyball world do you look up to the most?
I look up to my high school volleyball coach who was able to make a state championship team out of whatever he was given. He brought the best out of me. He was also just a great person who I am really close to. I respect him and he respects me.
6. If you could play any other sport at UNC, what would it be?
I would have to say soccer because I love watching it. That does not mean that I am good at it though.
7. What is the one food you could not live without?
Fruit... any kind of fruit! I love it!
8. Besides volleyball, what is another secret talent you possess?
People wouldn't think so, but I am really good at drawing. I love art and art history.
9. What are some of your individual and team goals for this year?
I plan to become a physically stronger player on the court. I have to build a toughness that seniors acquire after four years. I want to have that confidence now. As for the team, we just want to play volleyball well and have some fun. If that happens, we know that no one would be able to beat us.
10. What motivates you to be a great volleyball player?
The love of the sport. I love volleyball and that is why I play. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for that. I love the competition and the feeling of being a part of a team. Nothing is better when things are going well and you know, as well as the team, that we are going to win. It's an awesome feeling.
