Post-game Quotes
Roy Williams
Opening Statement:
"It was the kind of night, we were really good defensively. First half, the most impressive thing to me was only four turnovers. We talked about before the game that we had to do a better job and I congratulated them at halftime. That set the tone for the second half, because we turned the ball over 14 times. It was ragged and we have to do a better job disturbing the basketball without taking chances, without jumping up in the air and charging people. I was pleased the first half, I thought we had good shots and just didn't make a whole bunch of them. Second half, I still thought we were getting more shots and we just made more of them. I thought Wayne got us off to a great start early and I thought that 20 was his career high. I left him in there and he got a wide open three and missed, I told him I did my part. Tyler was impressive getting the ball and from the free throw line his was perfect. We are more gifted than South Carolina State is and we are supposed to win. I was pleased with our intensity.
"Number 1, the Johnson kid, was really good in the first half he had eight rebounds. Spencer Everett was three for three in the first half from three and I think he took one all year before that. Again, feel good about it. It was a working like effort that is what I asked from the team. South Carolina State, Tim Carter I have known him for a long time, he is going to do a good job with a the team and they played very hard. I know he is disappointed in the score, but at the same time he got to be excited about how his kids competed."
On Wayne Ellington expanding his game:
"We talked a great deal about that, with things to work on in the
summer. He has got to be able to get to the foul line more, he got to
penetrate and get to the mid-range, he's got to get to the basket. In
doing his job defensively, it would be a shame to take him out for
defensive of reasons like I did last year. I think he got better in
every phase of his game, but he has continued to be a scorer. He is not
just a stand still jump shooter, he is a scorer."
On the team getting
better over a tough stretch:
"We better grow a heck of a lot or we will come back everybody looking
three foot tall. It is a challenging three game stretch. Ty was 3-7 and
0-3 from the three-point line, 8-3 on the assist-turnover ratio. I
thought he set the tone for us defensively the whole game and it the
first game I felt that way. Part of that going is to have Ty establish
that defensive presence out front and have the team feed off on that.
It is hard for his guy to beat down the middle and he still can put
pressure on him. It was his best defensive effort by far and that is
the first time he made us feel that way, so hopefully that will
continue to grow."
On if he has had a team ever go on a tougher stretch with six road games:
"Probably not for six games, one year we played UCLA, at Oklahoma State
and Oklahoma on Big Monday and all of them were in the top 15. We have
had some tough stretches before, but probably not for six games on the
road like this."
S.C. State Coach Quotes
Tim Carter
On preparation for this game
"We are a very young basketball team from the standpoint of experience and my main focus was to see if we could play without getting overly rattled. Most of our guys have never been in this type of environment before and I wanted to see if we could battle. I thought Jason Johnson really battled. I thought Carrio Bennett really battled. Our point guard play has got to get better, but we just didn't execute. Against a team like this you must, must execute. We had thirty-two turnovers. But they are a great, great basketball team, they do things the right way, are extremely well coached and we just couldn't fight their pressure all night. We were really concerned about their pressure and forcing thirty-two turnovers, I had reason to be concerned about their pressure."
On what their team must work on for their upcoming games
"The more experience we can get at doing what we're trying to do with the program, the better off we're going to be. Our point guard play right now is really struggling and that's the key to our program right now. We have to get some good play out of our point guard and right now we're struggling at that spot."
