CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina rowing team closed out its fall schedule with racing at the Head of the Chattahoochee regatta in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Saturday and Sunday. On the Tennessee River, the Tar Heels competed in eights, fours, pairs and singles.
"Overall, we moved the small boats - the pairs and the fours - better than we moved the eights, which is fine," Haney said. "We've spent a lot more time in the pairs and the fours up to this point in the season. So we're racing well with what we've practiced and we feel good about that. All in all, it was a good weekend to wrap up our fall racing."
In the Championship Eight race on Saturday, UNC's varsity eight finished 15th in 18:46.3 and the second varsity eight was 22nd in 19:05.8. The varsity eight went off course and received a 10-second penalty in addition to the actual 20 seconds or so that it spent getting back on the correct course. "With the extra time, it's hard to see where we stacked up against our competitors," Haney said.
Racing in the varsity eight were Shannon Wilson (coxswain), Lisy McIntee, Megan McMullin, Whitney Hileman, Ruby Woodside, Cara Van Dorn, Kelsey Grich, Kasey Munson and Audrey Mosley. In the second varsity eight were Paige Wall (coxswain), Andrea McGovern, Diane Reynolds, Chandler Sours, Carly Dressler, Andi Drabot, Katie Wood, JoAnne Rogers and Eugenia Delbono.
UNC took third in the Freshman Novice Four in a time of 21:30.6. 18-boat field. Racing in an 18-boat field were coxswain Sarah Nolan, McGovern, Grich, Kristi Roblin and Mosley. "They just went out and had a good time and did a good job in their race," Haney said.
In the Championship Four race, UNC's A boat took fifth in 20:16.3, with UNC B finishing 21st (21:42.9) and UNC C in 23rd (22:05.9). "Our top four had a great race and did an excellent job," Haney said. "The next two did a good job. They could have been more powerful, but we're definitely moving better than we did at Occoquan."
Racing in the UNC A boat were Wilson, McIntee, McMullin, Van Dorn and Woodside. In UNC B were Amy Dement, Reynolds, Hileman, Wood and Munson. In UNC C were Wall, Kathryn Winz, Lindley Barrow, Emily Schultz and Molly Jones.
On Sunday, the Tar Heels raced in singles and pairs, with four boats competing in the open pairs race. McIntee and McMullin took second in a 19-boat field in a time of 21:42.5. In seventh in 22:54.8 were Woodside and Sours. Mosley and Hileman were 12th in 23:16.7 and Reynolds and Wood were 13th in 23:29.1.
McGovern raced in the championship singles, finishing 15th in 25:43.6 after equipment issues that slowed her down throughout the race. Van Dorn raced in the novice singles and finished third in 24:43.4.
