RALEIGH, N.C. - The North Carolina rowing team saw its first competition of the spring on Saturday morning at Lake Wheeler, with visiting Alabama winning all five races. On a windy morning that saw racing pushed up an hour to avoid the most disruptive weather, the Tar Heels gained valuable experience heading into a week of Spring Break training.
"We talked to our team about making sure that each practice is a top-notch effort technically and a top-notch effort as far as how hard we're pulling," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "We've challenged them with that and hopefully when we get to Spring Break and get some good training, we'll see how we come back and improve on the things that we were deficient in this weekend."
In the varsity eight, Alabama finished in 7:13.98 with North Carolina coming across at 7:27.30. The UNC lineup was Shannon Wilson (coxswain), Kelsey Grich, Lisy McIntee, Lindley Barrow, Cara Van Dorn, Megan McMullin, Whitney Hileman, Ruby Woodside and Kathryn Winz.
In the novice eight race, Alabama was first in 7:51.22, followed by UNC A (7:57.96), UNC B (8:01.43) and UNC C (8:16.20). The UNC A lineup was Emily Satterfield (coxswain), Anna Noguchi, Katherine Williamson, Paige Wolf, Cait Clendenin, Katie Frayler, Caroline Rekuc, Elizabeth Golly and Tallie Casucci. The UNC B lineup was Jill Lunsford (coxswain), Brittany Walsh, Michelle Rugel, Lauren Maidment, Ashley Trudeau, Laura Brookshire, Lindsay Paterniti, Vanessa Matos and Elena Boucher. The UNC C lineup was Adrianne Hughes (coxswain), Becca Brenner, Jordi Coats, Emily Johnson, Rachel Arnett, Shene Dawkins, Caitlin Long, Jocelyn Wang and Mel Carlson.
In the second varsity eight, Alabama crossed first in 7:34.81 and UNC finished in 7:41.55. Racing for the Tar Heels were Paige Wall (coxswain), Maegan Wareham, Diane Reynolds, Chandler Sours, Andi Drabot, Kristi Roblin, Katie Wood, Andrea McGovern and Molly Jones.
In the varsity four, Alabama's time was 8:31.55, followed by UNC in 8:46.90. UNC's lineup was Amy Dement (coxswain), Louise Licata (a member of the novice squad), JoAnne Rogers, Maeghan Sill and Emily Schultz.
In the novice four, the Crimson Tide finished in 8:53.71 with UNC at 9:01.25. Sarah Nolan was the Carolina coxswain and three Tar Heels rowing for the second time of the morning - Noguchi, Williamson and Wolf - were joined by Audrey Whitmeyer-Weathers.
"We're intentionally a little slower in getting to higher stroke ratings, but we're going to be more effective at the end of the season at the higher ratings," Haney said. "This is definitely an early race and we didn't want to top out our maximum speed at the beginning of March. So we're looking for a little more improvement throughout the spring than we typically have just by holding back and being a little bit more patient at the beginning of the spring."
The Tar Heels' next race is March 22, when they'll take on Bucknell in Charlottesville, Va.
