If ESPN is truly the Worldwide Leader in Sports, then Carolina has been the worldwide leader in college sports this week. ESPN.com has run three extended features on three different Tar Heel sports teams this week.
The first came early this week, when Roy Williams's Tar Heels debuted at number-1 on ESPN.com's Power 16. Sure, they can't spell Brandan Wright's name correctly, but it's still the preseason. ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi also picked Carolina to earn an NCAA Tournament top seed, and Tyler Hansbrough was a unanimous pick on the ESPN expert All-America teams.
Then the love moved to the diamond. On Tuesday, former Baseball America college ace Will Kimmey penned a lengthy feature on Mike Fox's Diamond Heels. Lots of fans have jumped on the Carolina baseball bandwagon in recent months; Kimmey's story is a great glimpse into how that program has been built--and will continue to be built. By the way, if you're from out of town and haven't been by Boshamer Stadium lately, drive by the next time you're in Chapel Hill. The progress made is quite a shocker.
And today, occasional Tar Heel Monthly contributor Anna Katherine Clemmons takes a look inside the Carolina field hockey program. Karen Shelton's team begins their NCAA quest tomorrow with a home game against Stanford, and Clemmons explains how the competitiveness of Rachel Dawson has led to a 20-0 record.
