Tuscaloosa, Ala. - Competing in front of a large crowd, and facing one of the top teams in the nation, the University of North Carolina gymnastics team scored a total of 194.800 to capture second place at Friday's meet. Host team University of Alabama won the meet with a score of 196.650. The Tar Heels' all-arounders, Christine Nguyen, Christine Robella, and Kara Wright, looked especially strong at the meet with all three gymnasts scoring above a 39.00.
"We competed in front of a big crowd that was enthusiastic and supportive of all the gymnasts, regardless of team," says Coach Derek Galvin. "I'm really proud at the noteworthy performances by all three of our all-arounders. Christine Nguyen looked poised and confident competing in front of the large crowd, as did Christine Robella and Kara Wright."
Once again, freshman Nguyen was the top performer for the Tar Heels. In addition to her second place tie in the all-around with a score of 39.350, Nyugen tied for second on vault (9.875), tied for first place on beam (9.850), and placed fifth on floor exercise (9.850).
Junior Shawna Kelly had another strong performance on the uneven bars and led the way for Carolina on that event with a score of 9.825.
On beam, freshman Tina Jacob performed a strong routine and tied for third place (9.825) with Olympian Terin Humphrey on that event. Likewise, Kara Wright, Sarrie Rubin, Christine Nguyen and Christine Robella all delivered solid routines on floor exercise as the team achieved one of their highest team floor scores (48.975) of the season.
"This meet was an excellent way to prepare for the environment we will perform in at the EAGL Championships and the NCAA Regional Meet," says Galvin. "This meet was a good experience for the team as we head into the final three meets of the regular season and continue to build for the EAGL Championships and the NCAA segment of the year."
The Tar Heels are back on the road for their next meet at the University of Maryland on March 10 at 4 p.m.
