CHAPEL HILL --- Megan Kaltenbach achieved an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 3,000 meters, and Brie Felnagle won two events, finished fourth in another, and improved upon an NCAA provisional time of her own as the North Carolina men's and women's track and field teams hosted the Carolina Classic Friday.
Kaltenbach clocked a 9:25.17 in the 3,000 meters to win the event title. Her time earned her a provisional qualification for the NCAA Championships and gave her a top-20 time in the nation this year. Addie Bracy, Laura Cummings and Morgan Stengel finished two-three-four to give UNC the top four finishers in the event.
Felnagle's 4:41.26 time in the mile gave her a new personal-best and is the nation's sixth-fastest time this year. It also improves upon the school's third best time that she set just last week. In addition to that event win, she added a second title on the day in the women's 800 meters, running a 2:14.12 to edge teammate and runner-up Colleen Farley's 2:15.94. Additionally, Felnagle trailed UNC's Niobra Peterson (third place in 58.30) to take fourth in the 400 meters (58.76), and was followed by teammate Erika Foushée (58.98) in fifth.
The Carolina women also picked up event wins from Abby Kimball in the pole vault with her 11-5 3/4 clearance and Kelly Fazekas, whose 50-4 throw in the shot put gave her the title, a new personal best and an NCAA provisional qualifying standard. Kimberly Warren's 46-7 1/4 toss gave her third place.
For the UNC men, Reggie Berry and Jeremy Hyder were both event champions. Berry's 23-5 1/4 leap in the long jump was the day's best effort, and Hyder's 4:18.72 was, similarly, the best time in the men's mile.
Also of note was Brock Baker finishing in second position in the men's 3,000 (8:34.19), Ryan Booker's fourth-place finish in the 200 (22.71), and third-place finishes by Ian Reynolds (shot put, 55-0 1/4) and Adam Smith (800 meters, 1:55.15).
The women also received second-place efforts from Ashley Haislip in the high jump, her 5-6 height earning her a runner-up finish, and Nyoka Norman, who recorded an 8.69 in the 60-meter hurdles.
La'Shonda Carter posted an 18-7 1/4 mark in the long jump to earn third, and Shardae Anderson (7.63) and Vanneisha Ivy (7.71) finished fourth and sixth in the 60-meter dash, respectively.
