
No. 1 Carolina Pulls Away From ODU, 18-4

CHAPEL HILL - The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team outscored Old Dominion, 9-0, in the second half on its way to its seventh consecutive victory, 18-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Fetzer Field. Five different Tar Heels scored two or more goals.
Carolina, ranked No. 1 in the nation this week in the IWLCA coaches poll and the Inside Lacrosse media poll, improves to 7-0 with the victory. Old Dominion falls to 2-1.
Christina Juras led Carolina with two goals and two assists. Chrissy Rude scored three goals, while Erica LaGrow, Kristen Taylor and Jenn Russell all scored twice. Melissa McCarthy, Megan Bosica and Meg Freshwater had one goal and one assist for UNC. ODU was led by Katie Veneziale's three goals.
The Tar Heels jumped out to a quick start, grabbing a 4-0 lead in the first nine minutes on two goals apiece by LaGrow and Russell. Jessica Noone and Veneziale scored back-to-back goals for ODU to cut the lead to 4-2 at the 19:11 mark. Carolina responded with three straight goals of its own to lead 7-2 at the 15:33 mark. Veneziale scored two more goals to cut the lead to 7-4 before the Tar Heels scored twice late to make it 9-4 at the break.
In the second half, the Tar Heels pulled away, going on a 9-0 scoring run in the period and outshooting the Monarchs, 21-5. Carolina also dominated the ground balls in the second half by an 11-5 margin.
Carolina will return to action on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Fetzer Field when it hosts Atlantic Coast Conference rival Virginia in a game to be webcast on ACCSelect.com
