BATON ROUGE, LA. - Behind Katie Miller's first-round 71, the North Carolina women's golf team ended Friday's first round of play in fourth at the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic held at the University Club in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Lauren Hunt shot a 73, while Sydney Crane turned in a 75 to help Carolina finish at 299 in fourth and five strokes behind first-round leader Vanderbilt.
Miller, Carolina's lone participating senior, finished the front nine at two-over, but rebounded on the back with birdies on 13,15, and 16 to lead her to her one-under 71. Mississippi State's Amanda Mathis and South Carolina's Jenna Pearson also shot 71 on the first round and currently share third with Miller.
Alongside UNC in fourth is sixth-ranked Auburn who received a 72 from Nicole Hage. Sitting one stroke ahead in second is both Tennessee and Duke- who claims the tournament's current leader, Amanda Blumenherst. Ranked as the nation's number-one player, Blumenherst carded a 68 to finish one stroke ahead of Vanderbilt's Jacqui Concolino.
With her 73, sophomore Lauren Hunt is currently in the top 10 in a tie for eighth with four other golfers. Hunt ended the front nine at even with a pair of bogeys and birdies, but then drew bogeys at 14 and 18 along with a birdie at 15, like Miller, to put her at one-over.
Fellow sophomore Sydney Crane also notched a pair of bogeys and birdies on the front, but faltered on hole nine with a double. Crane rebounded nicely on the back finishing with one bogey to put her at three-over for the day. Rounding out the scoring for the Tar Heels was Kate Thomas, who turned in an 80 coming off her sixth-place finish at the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational.
In the 26 years of the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic, this year's field of 21 teams is the largest, and perhaps the most difficult. 16 of the 21 teams are currently ranked in the top 50, while four are in the top 10.
The second round of the tournament will be held Saturday with play beginning at 8 a.m. CT. Sunday's final round will be a shotgun start slated for 8 a.m. For complete results and live scoring, simply visit www.golfstat.com.
