No. 11 North Carolina Closes Out California Trip With Victory Over San Diego State

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - Three doubles victories and four singles wins led No. 11 North Carolina to a 5-1 victory over San Diego State Saturday, closing out the Tar Heels' road trip to California. The win marks North Carolina's 28th straight non-conference win and the second straight victory over San Diego State. Carolina, ranked No. 11 nationally, remains undefeated with the win, improving to 12-0 on the season, while San Diego State fell to 5-6.
Victories at all three doubles seeds helped propel the Tar Heels to a 1-0 start over the Aztecs Saturday afternoon. An 8-3 victory at the three seed by Fogleman and Kearney earned the first doubles win for the Tar Heels. Gullan and Stone teamed at the one seed to defeat Ceban and Gomez, 8-3, to clinch the doubles point, while Hardy and Guejman won a 6-5 (5) match at the two seed over Groh and Timu.
With a 1-0 lead, victories at four singles spots led the Tar Heels to a 5-1 defeat over the Aztecs. Karl Wishart finished first at the six seed with a straight set win over Michael Beron. Taylor Fogleman followed right behind with a 7-6, 7-6 defeat at the five seed and Hardy's 7-6, 6-4 upset over No. 76 Christian Groh clinched the match at the two seed. Freshman Chris Kearney gave North Carolina a fifth point with his straight set victory at the four seed.
North Carolina next travels to Georgia Tech on Friday, March 23, to open ACC conference play. The match is slated for a 2:30 p.m. start.
