Atlanta, Ga.- In the opening match of Atlantic Coast Conference play for the North Carolina men's tennis team, the doubles point combined with three singles wins found a road victory for the Tar Heels over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Friday afternoon. Singles wins from lone senior Sebastian Guejman, junior Taylor Fogleman and freshman Chris Kearney, added to two doubles wins, propelled the Tar Heels to remain a perfect 13-0, 1-0 ACC, on the season, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 5-9, 2-2 ACC.
For the thirteenth time this season, North Carolina clinched the doubles point to gain a 1-0 lead heading into singles action. The power duo of Lenny Gullan and David Stone gave Carolina the advantage with a quick 8-5 decision over Yellow Jackets, Eric Molnar and Luke Rassow-Kantor, at the one seed. Clinching the point for the Tar Heels were Taylor Fogleman and Chris Kearney at the three seed. After a fierce battle ending in a 9-7 victory for Carolina, Fogleman and Kearney clinched the Tar Heels' advantage heading into singles play. Fogleman and Kearney remain undefeated in doubles on the season, posting a perfect 12-0 record.
Pushing the score to a 2-0 Carolina lead, Fogleman earned an impressive two-set victory over Rassow-Kantor, 6-2, 6-2. Fogleman is the first Tar Heel to reach 20 wins on the season, his record now stands at 20-5. Guejman's straight set win at the four seed earned Carolina's third point, giving the Tar Heels a good edge over the Yellow Jackets. Guejman's 6-4, 6-3 victory pushed his record to 12-2 on the season.
The Tar Heels' three point lead found little comfort as the Yellow Jackets quickly pulled within one with wins at the one and six seeds. Junior Benjamin Carlotti, ranked No. 46, fell in three sets at the one seed to Jose Muguruza, while fellow junior, Karl Wishart, dropped two sets to Scott Blackmon, setting the score 3-2. Meanwhile, at the three seed, freshman Kearney found himself in his third set after dropping the second to Jordan DeLass. Kearney proved victorious in the battle, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6, to clinch the match for North Carolina, 4-2. Georgia Tech's third point came from Eric Molnar who defeated Stefan Hardy in three sets at the two seed.
The Tar Heels face a quick turnaround as they set to play Clemson this Sunday. The match is slated for a 2:30 p.m. start.
