North Carolina has advanced to the Sweet 16 for an NCAA record 27th time and the 14th in the last 26 years (1981-2007).
Tyler Hansbrough scored 33 points, the second time in his career he scored 30 or more in a game (he had 40 against Georgia Tech on Feb. 15, 2006). It is the 16th time this year and 29th time in his career he scored 20 or more in a game.
Hansbrough's 33 points mark the most by a Tar Heel in an NCAA Tournament game since Al Wood had 39 against Virginia on March 28, 1981, in the national semifinals. It is the first time a UNC player has scored 30 or more in an NCAA game since Shammond Williams had 32 against UNC Charlotte on March 14, 1998.
Hansbrough's 33 points are the third-most by a Tar Heel in any NCAA Tournament game. Wood and Lennie Rosenbluth had 39 in the NCAA Tournament against Canisius in the East Regional semifinals on March 15, 1957.
Carolina out-rebounded Michigan State, 40-29. The margin of 11 is the most against the Spartans this year. MSU had been outrebounded by four by Indiana and Purdue.
The 81 points scored by UNC are the most against MSU this year (previous was 73 by Indiana on Jan. 7, 2007).
Ty Lawson scored 20 points, the second time this year he scored 20 or more. He had a season high 21 at NC State on Feb. 3.
Lawson was 8/1 assist/turnover tonight. In the five postseason games (ACC and NCAA) he has 32 assists and six turnovers. This is the 14th straight game he has more assists than turnovers.
Brandan Wright scored a season low three points (previous low was six against Virginai Tech in the home loss). That is just the fourth time in 35 games he scored in single digits.
Reyshawn Terry scored 12 of his 14 points tonight in the second half. In the ACC finals against NC State he had 10 of his 13 points in the last five minutes.
Hansbrough's 13 free throws equal the second-most by a Tar Heel in an NCAA Tourney game. Tommy Kearns hit 14 against Syracuse in 1957 East final and John Kuester hit 13 vs. Kentucky in 1977 East regional final. The 17 attempts are the second-most in an NCAA game. Kearns attempted 19 in that Syracuse game.
Carolina will be playing in the Meadowlands for the first time since losing to Indiana in December 21, 1999 in the Jimmy V Classic. It is the first time UNC will be playing in a regional in the Meadowlands since beating Arkansas and Cincinnati in 1993.
Carolina scored six bench points tonight, tying the fewest this year (at NC State).
