GREENSBORO, N.C. - For the second time in as many weeks, a North Carolina player has been awarded Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Player of the Week accolades as UNC's Anna Evans shares the honor this week with NC State's Abbie Sims, the league office announced Monday. Evans receives her first league recognition of the season -- and follows Tar Heel Lisa Norris, who won last week's award -- while it marks the second on the year for Sims.
Evans proved to be a driving force for a North Carolina team riding a school-record 20-game winning streak. She played a huge role in helping the Tar Heels put up 31 runs in just four games as they posted a 4-0 record last week. The senior from Fairmont, N.C., led the team in batting average (.769), hits (10), runs scored (8), RBI (7) and total bases (15), and was the only Tar Heel to record a home run on the week - a two-run walkoff blast that gave UNC its second run-rule victory over Virginia and capped a series sweep of the Cavaliers to start ACC play.
In four games last week, Evans went 10-for-13 at the plate and factored directly into 15 of Carolina's 31 runs. She had a multi-hit game each time out and twice recorded three hits in a game. Additionally, she collected one stolen base and 10 putouts from the shortstop position.
A native of Artesia, N.M., Sims threw a no-hitter against No. 6 Oklahoma and pitched the Wolfpack past No. 2 Arizona State at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif., last weekend. The senior hurler didn't allow a hit against the nation's top scoring offense in Oklahoma and held the Sun Devils to just seven in eight innings.
Evans and the Tar Heels will next be in action against UNC Wilmington in a doubleheader on Wednesday. Both games can be seen online via ACC Select.
