
Late Run Lifts No. 1 Carolina To Win at Loyola, 13-7

Baltimore, Md. - Top-ranked North Carolina got two goals and two assists from Erica LaGrow and three goals apiece from Christina Juras and Melissa McCarthy on the way to a 13-7 win at Loyola at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field on Friday afternoon on Friday afternoon. Carolina scored four of the game's final five goals to break open the game.
UNC improved to 4-0 this season while Loyola's record is now 1-2.
Meg Freshwater and Jess Allen each scored two goals for the Tar Heels, with Chrissy Rude adding one. Kristen Hordy started and played all 60 minutes in goal for Carolina, recording five saves. Carolina held a 39-14 advantage in shots during the game.
Allen scored the first goal of the game on a free position opportunity just 1:13 into the game. Loyola's Maura Kenny scored back-to-back goals in less than a minute to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. McCarthy tied it with a goal off an assist from LaGrow at the 26:38 mark before Kenny scored her third goal for a 3-2 Loyola lead.
The Tar Heels scored five straight goals from that point to grab a 7-3 lead early in the second half. McCarthy, Freshwater and LaGrow scored three in a row to end the first half with a 5-3 Carolina lead. Juras scored back-to-back goals in the first five minutes of the second half to complete the 5-0 Tar Heel run.
After the teams traded goals and Carolina led 9-6 with 16:20 left to play, the Tar Heels scored four of the game's final five goals to ice the win. McCarthy and Rude scored back-to-back unassisted goals, then Freshwater scored on a free position goal. Juras scored Carolina's final goal.
The Tar Heels will return to action on Sunday afternoon at Temple at 1 p.m.
