Chapel Hill, N.C. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team is ranked 21st in the first Golf World/NGCA Division I Coaches' Poll of the spring season. The Golf World/NGCA Coaches' Poll combines the resources of Golf World magazine and the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) . The poll is based on the selections of 27 women's coaches from across the country. The complete results, including results from Divisions II and III, will appear in the March 9th issue of Golf World and can be viewed online now at www.golfworld.com/womenspoll.
Georgia is number one in the poll, retaining the top spot from Golf World's last College Coaches' Poll of 2006. The Bulldogs tied for second place in their spring opener, the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. Rounding out the top five are: Arizona State (No. 2), Duke (No. 3), Auburn (No. 4) and Pepperdine (No. 5).
Other Atlantic Coast Conference teams ranked in the Golf World/NGCA Division I Coaches' Poll are: Virginia (No. 11) and Wake Forest (No. 19).
The Tar Heels were the runners-up in their first event of the spring campaign, the Chrysler Challenge, which was played in Destin, Fla. Senior Katie Miller finished in third place while junior Colette Lowe placed ninth. Carolina plays in the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla., March 10-11, and then travels on to Baton Rouge, La., to play in the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic March 16-18.
