CHAPEL HILL --- No. 11 North Carolina used one of its most dominating doubles points of the season take an early lead over No. 18 Duke and never looked back, scoring a 4-0 Senior Day sweep Sunday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Indoor Tennis Center. No. 6 Jenna Long, Sara Anundsen and No. 64 Sanaz Marand were victorious in singles play, and the match was halted after the clinching point was secured.
The win was worth one point in the Carlyle Cup, the annual all-sports competition between the two schools. With the win, Carolina now leads 10.5-9.5.
UNC (20-7, 8-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) easily took the doubles point, losing just three games in three matches. The tandem of Meg Fanjoy and Austin Smith got things started with an 8-0 sweep of Clelia Deltour and Tory Zawacki at No. 3. Moments later No. 3 Long and Anundsen finished off an 8-1 win over Melissa Mang and Jessi Robinson. No. 28 Caitlin Collins and Marand led 7-2 when the point was clinched.
Singles action was more competitive, but the Tar Heels scored three straight-set victories at the Nos. 1, 5 and 6 positions to finish off the sweep of the Blue Devils (10-9, 5-6 ACC). Marand made it 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Robinson at No. 3. That was quickly followed by Long's 6-1, 6-4 win over No. 75 Mang at No. 1. Fittingly it was another senior in Anundsen who sealed the win. Anundsen took care of Deltour 6-3, 6-4 to end it.
In two of the suspended matches, the two teams split a pair of sets. No. 62 Tsang dropped her first set to Elizabeth Plotkin 7-5 but led 3-1 when the match was halted.
Carolina will now prepare for the ACC Tournament April 19-22 in Cary, N.C.
