CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - In a game that featured over 22 hours of weather delays, No. 24 Georgia Tech scored a 9-5 win over No. 4 North Carolina to even the three-game series at Boshamer Stadium Sunday. The Yellow Jackets (31-19, 15-10 ACC) owned a five-run lead when play was called Saturday night and held off a late rally by the Tar Heels (40-11, 17-9 ACC) in the eighth and ninth innings when action was resumed Sunday.
Right fielder Wally Crancer went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI, and catcher Matt Wieters and designated hitter Luke Murton each added two RBI for Georgia Tech.
First baseman Dustin Ackley and designated hitter Kyle Seager each had two hits for the Tar Heels, who also got a two-run home run by Chad Flack, his sixth of the season.
Highlighted by a three-run home run by Crancer in the third inning Saturday, Georgia Tech held a 6-1 lead when play was resumed at 12:35 p.m. The Yellow Jackets wasted little time adding to their lead with three runs in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Crancer and a two-run double off the top of the wall by Murton.
Carolina had a chance to get back in the game in the sixth when it loaded the bases with the help of two Tech errors but it could not come up with a big hit. Flack's two-run home run in the eighth cut the lead to 9-3, and RBI by Seth Williams and Ackley brought the Tar Heels within four runs in the ninth.
Georgia Tech's Eddie Burns allowed just three hits and one unearned run over four innings, but was not eligible for the win. It went to reliever Chris Hicks, who came on when play resumed Sunday and allowed four runs on five hits over the final five innings.
UNC right-hander Alex White (4-4) went just 3 2/3 innings for the shortest start of his career and allowed six runs on seven hits and two walks, all on Saturday. Freshman B.J. Dail pitched well in relief for the Tar Heels, allowing just one hit over a career-long three innings.
