Yellow Jackets Upend No. 2 Seed Tar Heels In ACC Tourney

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Georgia Tech's David Duncan scattered five hits and three runs over eight innings as the seventh-seeded Yellow Jackets surprised No. 2 seed North Carolina, 8-4, Wednesday in the second game of the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Tournament.
The Tar Heels (45-12, 21-9) lost their opening game as a No. 2 seed for the second year in a row and have now dropped six consecutive ACC tournament games since 2004.
Duncan moved to 7-4 on the year as he matched his season-high effort of eight innings. After giving up back-to-back, run-scoring singles in the fourth inning, he allowed just one hit and two walks over the next 4 2/3 innings.
The No. 7-seeded Yellow Jackets (32-23, 15-14) scored four runs in the seventh inning to take the lead at 6-3 as they bunched three singles, three walks and a hit batter off four Carolina pitchers in the inning. Seven Carolina pitchers combined to issue a team season-high 11 walks.
Patrick Long led Tech's 11-hit attack with three singles and a walk while driving in one run. Matt Wieters and Chris House each had a pair of hits and two RBI while Wally Crancer added two hits and one RBI for the Yellow Jackets.
Chad Flack and Tim Fedroff each had two hits and an RBI to lead UNC's seven-hit attack.
Georgia Tech meets Virginia on Thursday in a battle of first-round winners, while first-day losers North Carolina and North Carolina State will meet in the evening contest of the tournament which has gone to a round-robin format this year for the first time in league history.
