UNC Golfers Are Tied For 18th Place After Second Round of The NCAA Championship

The University of North Carolina women's golf team shot a 33-over-par 321 and moved from a tie for second place to tied for 18th with Arizona after play in the second round of the NCAA Championship at LPGA International, Legends Course. The Tar Heels fell 31 stokes behind second round team leader Duke University which moved from fifth place to first with a combined two round total of 11-over-par, 587.
Following Duke in team competition is UCLA. Jumping from a seventh place to second, the Bruins are seven strokes behind the Blue Devils at 594 while Purdue moved up to third position at 597. Two more Pac 10 teams round out the top five; Stanford University comes in at 599 while Southern California anchors down fifth place with a 601 total.
The Tar Heels did not perform as well as they did in the Tuesday's opening round when the team fired a 297. Freshman Kate Thomas, from Bathurst, Australia led the Tar Heels with a 4-over-par 76 and tied for 23rd. Sophomore Lauren Hunt, from Little River, S.C., shot a six-over-par 78 and tied for 36th. Sophomore Sydney Crane, from Jamestown, N.C., shot a 11-over-par 83 while Katie Miller, a senior from Jeannette, Pa., and Ann Laney, a junior from Charlotte, N.C., posted a two day total of 162 and are tied in 107th place.
This is Carolina's 10th appearance in the NCAA Championship and the Tar Heels' highest finish is eighth place on four different occasions. Austin has taken six teams to the NCAA Championship with her highest finish being eighth place in 1995.
Christel Boeljon of Purdue leads all individuals after firing a second score of three-under 69 for a two day total of 3-under-par, 141. Stacy Lewis of Arkanas moves into second place at 142 while Amanda Blumenherst of Duke, Tiffany Joh of UCLA, Catherine Martranga of TCU sit one stroke back of Lewis in a tie for third place at 143. Lauren Todd of Stanford and Jacqui Concolino rounds out the top six in individual scoring at 144,
The 72-hole event continues through Friday at the LPGA International, Legends Course, which features a par 72, 6,351-yard layout.
