DURHAM, N.C. - North Carolina first baseman Dustin Ackley was named Baseball America's Freshman of the Year Thursday, giving the Walnut Cove native a quartet of national rookie honors on the season. Joining Ackley on the publication's freshman All-America squad was Tar Heel outfielder Tim Fedroff, who garnered a second-team selection.
Also named national freshman of the year by Collegiate Baseball, Rivals.com and Ping! Baseball, Ackley posted one of the finest offensive seasons in school history and became just the fourth Tar Heel to hit over .400. He led the country and set a school record with 119 hits en route to his .402 average, which was the fourth-best mark in school history.
Ackley also set a UNC record with 296 at-bats, was fourth all-time at UNC with 74 RBI, fourth with 175 total bases and ninth with 70 runs scored. Also the ACC's Freshman of the Year and a first-team all-league honoree, Ackley was a consensus All-America selection and a freshman All-America choice.
Fedroff, a Flagtown, N.J., product, was the Tar Heels' second leading hitter with a .344 average in 63 games. He drove in 41 runs, scored 48 times and added five home runs, seven doubles and five triples. Fedroff slugged .498 and posted a .396 on-base percentage. Additionally, he fielded a perfect 1.000 in right field for UNC. Fedroff is a consensus freshman All-America.
Headed by Ackley and Fedroff, the Tar Heels will return four of their top five hitters in terms of average in 2008.
