CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina and its baseball program, which has finished as the national runner-up in each of the last two seasons, will hold a formal groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a state-of-the-art Boshamer Stadium Saturday, Sept. 1 at 12:30 p.m.
"Our supporters have been most generous to this long-overdue project," said Director of Athletics Dick Baddour. "We are excited about creating a facility that properly supports the outstanding program developed under Mike Fox's leadership. The fund-raising effort is still underway as we want to complete all phases of the project."
The major remodeling of the structure is expected to begin by the end of August, but the Carolina coaching staff already has been moved to different offices on campus and the locker room and equipment room also have been relocated.
The Tar Heels will be able to practice on the field at Boshamer for the majority of their fall season and a portion of the spring. Carolina is slated to play its 2008 schedule on the Stadium Field at the new USA Baseball National Training Complex at Cary's Thomas Brooks Park Cary. The team will also hold its annual intra-squad Fall World Series at the Team USA facility, which opened earlier this year.
According to the Town of Cary, "The Stadium Field has a press box that includes two suites, official scorer's room, a sound room and press row. The Stadium has spectator seating for 1,754 people, including handicapped accessible seating, and additional grass seating for approximately 250 people is also available."
In 2009, the new Bryson Field at Boshamer Stadium, which will be built in the same footprint as the existing field, will feature more than 4,000 chair-back seats, premium seating, a wider concourse and new restrooms and concessions. Fans will also be able to enjoy a Hall of Honor celebrating the success of Carolina baseball through the years.
The Diamond Heels will have use of brand new team facilities as well, including a 1,500-square foot clubhouse, a 2,600-square foot weight room with adjoining training room that will feature a hydro-therapy center. The facility will also feature a 4,500-square foot indoor/outdoor hitting and pitching practice facility.
The upper deck of the new stadium will feature offices for the coaching staff, as well as a new press box with separate television and radio booths. Club level suites will be available for lease.
