CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Coming off an 11-6-3 campaign and a school-record eighth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2006, the North Carolina men's soccer team is ranked 16th in the 2007 NSCAA/adidas Division I Preseason Poll, which was released Tuesday.
Despite losing seven starters from a year ago, the Tar Heels return four of their top seven scorers from a year ago in midfielders Michael Callahan, Scott Campbell and Zach Loyd and forward Bill Dworsky. Senior preseason All-America Andre Sherard will anchor the Carolina defense.
The Tar Heels are one of six Atlantic Coast Conference teams in the poll, joining No. 3 Wake Forest, No. 4 Duke, No. 5 Virginia, No. 9 Maryland and No. 12 Clemson.
UNC opened practice earlier this week and will kick off the 2007 regular season with the annual Carolina Nike Classic, which is slated for Aug. 31 and Sept. 2 at Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels will take on Davidson in an exhibition match Tuesday, Aug. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at Fetzer.
