CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - On the strength of the first career goal by freshman midfielder Cameron Brown, No. 16 North Carolina played to a 1-1 draw with No. 20 Old Dominion Sunday in the finale of the 2007 Carolina Nike Classic at Fetzer Field.
After the Tar Heels (0-1-1) went in front late in the first half, the Monarchs (0-1-1) tied the score on a goal from Ollie Lutton in the 63rd minute. Carolina outshot ODU by a 13-10 margin, but could not find the go ahead goal over the final 27 minutes of regulation or in the 20 minutes of overtime.
Second-ranked Wake Forest (2-0-0) captured the tournament title with a 2-0 shutout of Monmouth (1-1-0) earlier Sunday.
In the day's second game, the Tar Heels held possession for the majority of the first half and grabbed the lead with just 1:31 remaining in the period on Brown's first collegiate strike. Sophomore forward Bill Dworsky kept the ball in bounds along the right sideline and crossed it into the box to Brown, who dribbled around ODU keeper Evan Newton and deposited a five-yard shot just inside the far post.
ODU knotted the score at one in the 63rd minute on the goal by Lutton off assists from Daniel Haywood and Yomby William. Haywood served a corner kick to the top of the box, and William headed the ball to Lutton in front of the goal.
Carolina controlled play towards the end of the second half but could not find the go ahead goal in regulation. The Tar Heels best chance came on a rocket off the crossbar from defender Zach Loyd in the 87th minute.
Neither side mustered much of an offensive threat in overtime, but UNC preseason All-America defender Andre Sherard broke up a one-on-one run by ODU forward Ambane Emmanuel to help preserve the tie.
UNC freshman keeper Tyler Deric went all 110 minutes and made four saves. Newton made six stops for the Monarchs.
Carolina is back in action next weekend against Bradley and Akron at the Wake Forest adidas Classic in Winston-Salem.
