RALEIGH, N.C. - For the second straight season a Tar Heel claimed the Raleigh Hot Stove League North Carolina College Player of the Year Award, as Dustin Ackley was honored at Tuesday's 58th annual banquet at NC State's McKimmon Center.
Ackley joins Florida Marlins hurler Andrew Miller as back-to-back Hot Stove award winners for the Tar Heels. The Walnut Cove native earned national freshman of the year honors and was an All-America selection as a rookie in 2007. He hit .402 with 10 home runs, 20 doubles, 74 RBI and led the nation with 119 hits. Ackley and the Tar Heels recorded their second straight College World Series finals appearance.
Carolina opens the 2008 season Feb. 22 at Florida Atlantic.
