Tar Heels Win Twice At Lone Star Duals

SOUTH GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - ehind unbeaten days from juniors Keegan Mueller and Justin Dobies, North Carolina captured two of its three outings Saturday at the Lone Star Duals at South Grand Prairie High School Coliseum. The Tar Heels (3-2) eased past Ivy League opponents Brown, 28-3, and Harvard, 35-3, before falling to No. 19 Oklahoma, 27-6.
The 165-pound Mueller and the heavyweight Dobies were the lone UNC wrestlers to go 3-0 on the day. After victories against Brown and Harvard, both Tar Heels posted victories over nationally ranked opponents in the loss to the Sooners. Mueller, who is ranked 18th in the nation, posted a 6-4 decision over No. 12 Max Dean, while Dobies scored a 7-3 decision over No. 14 Nathan Fernandez. Mueller is now 15-3 on the season, while Dobies owns a 16-5 record.
Additionally, freshman Kyle Kiss, redshirt freshman Nick Stabile and sophomore Dennis Drury each won two of their three bouts Saturday. All three got off to 2-0 starts before falling against Oklahoma. Kiss and Stabile both have 12 victories on the season.
In the opener the Tar Heels had little trouble with Brown, winning nine of 10 bouts, including the final eight. Senior Drew Forshey got things started with a 17-4 major decision over Mike Piccirrilo at 125 pounds, and after a loss at 133, Carolina won the next eight via decision for the final 25-point margin. Mueller opened his day with a 7-1 decision over Chris Musser, while Dobies got things started with a 6-4 win over Levon Mock in the final bout against the Bears.
UNC followed with a second dominating performance against the Ivy League with the 35-3 win over Harvard. The Tar Heels again captured nine of the 10 matches, highlighted by Mueller's pin of Craig Carpenter in just 1:14 at 165 pounds. Carolina added major decisions from Robert McCarthy at 184 and Dobies at heavyweight over the final three bouts to extend the final margin to 32 points.
Against Big 12 power Oklahoma, the Tar Heels fell behind 18-0 before Mueller put Carolina on the board with his third win of the day. The Sooners bounced back with three straight decisions before Dobies closed the night with a win for UNC.
The Tar Heels return to action next Sunday, January 13 at Carmichael Auditorium against ACC rival Maryland at 1 p.m. and Belmont Abbey at 3 p.m.
