NEWTON, Mass. -- After giving up a goal less than two minutes into Sunday's game, the North Carolina field hockey team stormed back with three second-half scores to beat Yale 3-1. Fourth-ranked UNC improved to 10-3 on the season while Yale fell to 2-8.
The game was played at Boston College's Newton Campus Turf Field, where the Tar Heels lost 2-0 to BC Friday in a conference contest.
"I'm pleased with the team for coming back and getting a split for the weekend," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "You always want to see how your team will respond after a loss. Yale surprised us with an early goal, but we fought back to score three very well-executed goals."
The Bulldogs' goal came just 1:36 into the game, when Ashley McCauley scored on an assist Alyssa Jethani . The Tar Heels played the rest of the half down 1-0, but answered seven minutes into the second period. At the 43:23 mark, sophomore Kiki Norbruis scored on a penalty corner to tie the game. Just over five minutes later, senior Britt van Beek notched the gamewinner, her fourth of the season. The goal came on a pass from sophomore Katelyn Falgowski.
On the day, Carolina had 33 shots to four by Yale and 11 penalty corners to the Bulldogs' five. Goalkeeper Brianna O'Donnell made three saves for the Tar Heels, while Yale's Katie Bolling collected 15.
UNC was without three players for the weekend's action. Elizabeth Drazdowski, Riley Foster and Jackie Kintzer are representing the U.S. at the Junior Pan American Games in Mexico City. They have helped the USA to the gold medal game, in which they'll meet Chile on Sunday evening.
The Tar Heels return to action on Saturday, hosting No. 10 Virginia at Henry Stadium for a 1 p.m. Atlantic Coast Conference matchup. Next Sunday, UNC hosts No. 7 James Madison.
